José Ángel Lamas

José Ángel Lamas ( born August 2, 1775 in Caracas, † December 10, 1814 ) was a Venezuelan composer and the main representative of the classical period of the country.

Life

Lamas was a pupil of Juan Manuel Olivares and Padre Sojo. In 1789 he became a member of the orchestra of the Cathedral of Caracas, where he played the chirimía, a precursor instrument of the oboe. In 1796 he was the first among the new Kapellmeister Cayetano Carreño bassoonist of the orchestra.

1801 was his most famous work Populus Meus, which was premiered at the Cathedral of Caracas. Today, the Conservatory of Caracas and a national music competition bear his name.
