José Bordas Valdez

José Bordas Valdez ( rare: " Valdés ", born August 6, 1874 in Santiago de los Caballeros, † 1968 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican politician and president of the Dominican Republic.

Biography

Bordas began his political career shortly before the fall of dictator Ulises Heureaux and the subsequent unrest due to the different political views between the followers of Juan Isidro Jiménez ( Jiminista ) and Horacio Vásquez ( Horacista ). In 1899 he was first commander of army units in Mao and then in Dajabón where there was heavy fighting against rebel groups. In 1904 he was first appointed governor of the province of Santiago. Three years later he was appointed governor of the San Pedro de Macoris province and in the same year the province of Puerto Plata. Subsequently, he was a senator representing the interests of the province of Monte Cristi.

On 1 March 1913 he was a compromise candidate successor of Archbishop Adolfo Alejandro Nouel as president of the Dominican Republic. His swearing-in ceremony was followed six weeks later on 13 April 1913. Soon, however, the old conflicts between the flows of Horacistas and Jiministas came on again, which led to a renewed revolution ultimately. At the same time, the country was facing an enormous economic crisis, so he agreed to the establishment of a U.S. commission agent for the control of customs revenue and government spending. Then the revolution in Cibao reached its peak, the Bordas the calling of pre early presidential elections led to it but no more came after the warring factions of the Horacista and Jiminista united in their opposition to Bordas. On 27 August 1914 he stepped back then and was replaced by Ramón Báez, son of Buenaventura Báez, one of the founding fathers of the Republic, as President.

Then he pulled himself up to his death 54 years after his retirement from political life back.
