José Cos y Macho

Justo José María Cardinal Cos y Macho ( born August 6 1838 in Terán, Cantabria, Spain, † December 17, 1919 in Valladolid) was Archbishop of Valladolid.

Life

José Cos y Macho first attended the Jesuit school in Segura and then studied the subjects of philosophy and Catholic theology in Santander and Salamanca. He earned his doctorate in theology in 1862, and received the sacrament of Holy Orders. After further studies, he worked as a lecturer at the Department of Santander. In 1865 he became canon of the cathedral of Oviedo, in 1882 secretary of the local finance department of the archbishop. In 1884 he received the appointment as archdeacon of the Cathedral Chapter of Córdoba.

1886 he was appointed by Pope Leo XIII. Bishop of Mondoñedo, 1889 Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba. From 1891 until his death was José Cos y Macho Senator of the Spanish kingdom. 1892 appointed him to the Pope as Bishop of Madrid, in 1901 Archbishop of Valladolid. Pope Pius X took José Cos y Macho on 27 November 1911 as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria del Popolo in the College of Cardinals to. Cardinal José Cos y Macho took part in the conclave of 1914. He died on December 17, 1919 in Valladolid and was buried in the local cathedral.
