José Craveirinha

José Craveirinha ( born May 28, 1922 in Lourenço Marques, Mozambique, † February 6, 2003 in Maputo ) is regarded as the greatest poet of his country.

Child of a Portuguese father and an African mother from the Ronga ethnic group, Craveirinha grew up in the language and culture of Portugal. His poems, written in Portuguese, treat topics such as racism and the Portuguese colonial rule in Mozambique. He was one of the pioneers of Africa's negritude movement.

As a journalist Craveirinha wrote articles for a number magazines and newspapers, including O Brado Africano, Notícias, Tribuna, Notícias da Tarde, Voz de Moçambique, Notícias da Beira, Diário de Moçambique and Voz Africana. He also wrote under the pseudonyms Mário Vieira, José Cravo, Jesuíno Cravo, J. Cravo, JC and Abílio Cossa.

Craveirinha also played football and coached other athletes. Maria de Lurdes Mutola For he arranged a scholarship athletes in the U.S., she won a gold medal in the 400 - meter hurdles at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, and his son Stelio held the national record in long jump.

Because of his membership in a cell of FRELIMO, the Mosambikischen Liberation Front, he was held by the secret service PIDE of the Portuguese fascist regime from 1965 to 1969 in solitary confinement. When FRELIMO came to power in 1974, Craveirinha was freed from prison and appointed Assistant Director of the national press.

Craveirinha in 1991 awarded the Portuguese Prémio Camões, the greatest honor for Lusophone literature. Several times he was for the Nobel Prize in Literature in conversation.

2003 Craveirinha was declared by President Joaquim Chissano to a " national hero " and he emphasized Craveirinhas contribution in the fight against colonialism.
