José Escolástico Andrino

José Escolastico Andrino (* 1817 in Guatemala City, † July 14, 1862 in San Salvador ) was a Guatemalan composer, violinist and music writer.

Life

José Escolastico Andrino learned to play the violin and composition with his older brother, the violinist Máximo Andrino. After completing his training he was in Havana, Cuba, employed as a violinist in the opera theater. After his return to Guatemala City, he finally settled down from 1845 in San Salvador, El Salvador. Here he worked as an organist in the Cathedral and violin and Tonsatzlehrer in his own music school. Later he became a civil servant of the city and designed a new system for the post, which remained in force long. Andrino is the first Central American composer of which a concertante instrumental work is present, namely the Theme and Variations in G Major for Violin and Orchestra. His opera La mora gene pink ( The generous Maurin ), may have been listed in 1857 in Guatemala City in Variedades Theatre. His Symphony in D Major, who was found by the composer Esteban Servellón, is a work in classical symphonic form and frühromantischem style.

As a composer Andrino is familiar with the classic style, while his villancicos show rhythmic and melodic elements of Guatemalan folk music. His book Nociones de Filarmonía y para la historia de la apuntes música (San Salvador, 1847) is of great importance for the history of music of Central America, and was designed by music historians such as José Sáenz Poggio (1878 ) and Rafael Vásquez (1950 ) quotes.
