Jose the Galilean

R. Jose ha - Gelili ( Jose Hagelili Hebrew " R. Jose the Galilean ," he was Galilean origin ) was a standing reputed great piety Jewish scholar of antiquity, flourished about the year 100 AD and belonged to the so-called second generation of Tannaim.

He disputed with R. Eleazar ben Azariah, and R. Akiba Tarfon.

As a stranger, but already with the knowledge, authority and self-confidence of a teacher equipped, he appeared in the House of Study of Yavneh and acquired in a short time such a reputation that even Akiba had fallen from him words of sharp criticism and occasionally because of Joses opposition changed his mind ( Babyl. Chagiga 14 a; Pesachim 36b ).

By Jose ha - Gelili, statements about sacrifice and temple worship have survived. Joses haggadic number interpretation of the plagues of Egypt has been included in the Haggadah shel Pesach.

Noteworthy are his judgments, that one should cook poultry in milk and that leavened bread on Passover was forbidden only as food, but not for other usage.

Even in the 3rd century, Samuel ben Nachmani commented on Jose's great piety: " When Israel sinned, and consequently fails the rain, but a good man, such as Jose ha - Gelili was one prays, would fall immediately rain from the sky " ( Pallet Taanit I, 1).

Jose left two sons: R. Eliezer and R. Hanina.
