Josef Dessauer

Josef Dessauer ( born May 28, 1798 in Prague, † July 8, 1876 in Vienna) was a Jewish Austrian pianist and composer. His father was a native of Dessau Prague wholesalers Aron Dessauer, in Vienna in 1817 came to Christianity. His mother Sarah was the daughter of the Berlin big merchant Levin Hertz.

Life

Dessauer followed at a young age at first the desire of parents and devoted himself to commercial training. Nevertheless, Friedrich Dionys Weber (1766-1842) and Johann Wenzel Tomaschek he studied next ( 1774-1850 ). In the wake of his success as a pianist in the course of Naples Travel in 1821 he finally decided to become a professional musician. From then on he devoted himself increasingly to his composition studies. In the course of several visits 1831/32 he visited Italy, France and England, but has made repeated for a short time in Vienna before he settled about the year 1835 there permanently. He took part in the intensive Viennese musical and intellectual life and was almost all the great musicians of his time on friendly terms, such as Rossini, Schubert, Berlioz, Mendelssohn, Liszt and Chopin, to name only the best known.

Work

In addition to the operas " Lidwinna " (1836 ), " A visit to St. Cyr " (1838 ), " Paquita " ( 1851) and " Dominga " (1860 ) he created numerous vocal and instrumental works. His music, which can recognize the different influences of his numerous trips, enjoyed during his lifetime rightly great acclaim.
