Josef Gingold

Josef Gingold ( born October 28, 1909 in Brest- Litovsk, Poland, † January 11, 1995 in Bloomington, Indiana) was an American violinist and educator.

He emigrated in 1920 to the United States where he studied violin with Vladimir Graffman and Eugène Ysaÿe. After 1937 he was concert master ( and occasional soloist) at the Detroit Orchestra, and had the same position with the Cleveland Orchestra held later. He published numerous books on violin technique, including those of Mazas and Kayser. His students include Sho -Mei Pelletier, who plays at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in Texas and the famous violinist Joshua Bell. Before his death, he taught at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He played on a Stradivarius violin from 1683 (1).
