Josef Grassi

Mathias Joseph Grassi ( born April 22, 1757 Vienna, † January 7, 1838 in Dresden, Giuseppe Grassi ) was an Austrian historical and portrait painter.

Life

Mathias Josef Grassi was the younger brother of the sculptor Anton Matthias Grassi, the father was a native of Udine Goldsmith Ottilio Grassi. Joseph studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Since he felt unfairly treated here ( losing to Heinrich Friedrich Füger for a travel scholarship), he went to Warsaw. There he painted numerous portraits successfully. During the Polish uprising, he was able to leave the scene of fighting through the mediation of the revolutionary leader Tadeusz Kosciuszko. 1799 received Grassi in Dresden a professorship at the Academy. From 1816 to 1821 he stayed in a study director of the Royal Saxon retirees in Rome property. Grassi received by the Saxon King Frederick Augustus I the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit and was appointed by Duke Augustus of Saxe -Gotha to the secret counselor of legation. In addition, he was a member of various academies.

Performance

Grassi mainly painted portraits of members of the aristocracy and history paintings. Several pictures were taken by seals of the Duke Augustus of Saxe -Gotha. Default style can be attributed it to the academic classicism. His sensitive portraits of women were particularly appreciated by their grace. In his time as a portraitist very popular, he is now largely forgotten. The most famous is still his portrait of Queen Louise of Prussia.
