Josef Hamerl

Josef " Pepi " Hamerl (born 22 January 1931) is a former Austrian football player. The national team was part of the famous sports club storm in the late 1950s and became famous especially through the European Cup with Juventus on October 1, 1958.

Career

Pepi Hamerl started his football career after the end of World War II in the small associations Liesinger ASK Erlaa and SC Siebenhirten before he joined the Favoritner talent factory FC Vienna in early 1952. His championship debut came against the 2-0 home win against AC Floridsdorfer in lap 22, where he had once taken a hit with his new club in front. He soon became a regular at the favorite leaders and soon attracted the interest of some top Austrian clubs. In the spring 1955 season Pepi Hamerl changes to Austria Vienna in the Prater, there was, however, deported on the bench. Thus, the striker returned to the violets just half a year back and returned to Vienna FC. After Pepi Hamerl reach 1956 18 goals in only 35 championship matches he promptly received an offer from the Wiener Sport -Club, which he accepted. In Dornbach the striker should experience his most successful period. Together with Walter Horak, Adolf Knoll, Erich Hof and Karl Skerlan he made the famous sports club storm, with which he could win the championship in 1958 and 1959. For two years, or 41 games in a row, he remained undefeated with his team. His most famous play he delivered in the European Cup of Champions. At the legendary 7-0 victory over the Italian champions Juventus he scored only four goals.

In the national squad Pepi Hamerl could hold at that time walk, his debut was on March 23, 1958 in a 3-2 victory over Italy. He also played in the European Championship in 1960, failed to France in Austria in the quarterfinals and was used in several well-known games in the Decker era to use, so with the victories over Spain and the Soviet Union before record crowd in 1960. Together with strike partner Karl Skerlan decided Pepi Hamerl 1961 change to Admira Vienna to Jedlesee. After only two years at the Admiralty, however, he returned back to the sports club, but could not connect to the successful times in Dornbach. His last season in the championship graduated Pepi Hamerl 1967 for the 1st SC Wiener Neustadt, after he was a year previously gone even for SV Kapfenberg hunting for goals. In total he scored 158 goals in Austria's highest league.
