Josef Hopmann

Josef Hopmann ( born December 22, 1890 in Berlin, † October 11, 1975 in Bonn) was an astronomer.

He worked as an astronomer at Bonn, where he habilitated in 1920. In 1930 he was o.Prof. of astronomy at the University of Leipzig. At the University of Vienna in 1951, he took over the management of the Institute and the University Observatory Vienna.

His research was among others in the fields of stellar parallaxes, star clusters and double stars, and profile measurements and height provisions on the Earth's moon. He led them even after his retirement in 1961 intensively and published until his death in 1975.

A 90 km diameter crater on the moon back carries Hopmanns name. Furthermore, the asteroid (1985 ) Hopmann was named after him.

Hopmann one of the few star researchers who have also written popular representations.
