Josef Kramolín

Josef Kramolín (also: Cramolini; Gram Molin; Kramolini; born April 11, 1730 in Nymburk, † May 2, 1802 in Karlsbad) was a Bohemian painter and fresco artist.

Biography

Josef Kramolín trained in painting by a Jesuit. In 1758 he became a lay brother at the Jesuit order. After its dissolution in 1773 he spent a short time in Osek and was then in Carlsbad, where he was alderman. In 1799 he visited Prague, to study the paintings in churches and libraries. He paid particular attention to the frescoes by Franz Anton Maulbertsch in the library of the Strahov Monastery.

Josef Kramolín painted almost exclusively religious paintings, and his clients were mainly religious institutions and religious. His brother Wenceslas Kramolín (1733-1799) was also a painter and has been proven as a master of Prague bill for 1772.
