Josef Madersperger

Josef Madersperger ( born October 6, 1768 in Kufstein, † October 2, 1850 in Vienna ) was a master tailor. He is regarded as one of the inventors of the sewing machine.

Life

Josef Madersperger moved in 1790 with his father to Vienna because his parents Tyrolean house was burned. There he began in 1807 with the development of the sewing machine into which he put all his savings and all his spare time. In 1814 he presented his first sewing machine that mimicked the movement of the human hand sewing. Madersperger nonutilized in 1815 granted him privilege that went out after 3 years.

He has temporarily brought by a fruiterer, such as the request to the City Council refer to concession. However, it is not known how Madersperger has exercised this trade license. In 1823 he lived at least in the Himmelpfortgasse 14 and was run as a has-been middle-class tailor.

After several unsuccessful attempts at improvement Madersperger invented in 1839 a machine that mimicked the weaving process and worked with the chain stitch. Since Madersperger had no money to build a factory, he gave his sewing machine model 1839 the kk Polytechnic Institute. In 1841 he received a bronze medal from the Lower Austrian Trade Association.

Madersperger died on October 2, 1850, after only three months of communal living with his wife, destitute in Vienna's supply house and was buried in the nearby St. Marx cemetery in a mass grave. The Viennese tailors ' guild had built a cast-iron cross on its approximate grave location and maintains this to this day.

Josef Madersperger in honor of a monument in Resselpark 1933 unveiled on Karlsplatz, also contribute streets in Vienna, Linz, Innsbruck and Kufstein his name. At the site of the former care home in Sankt Marx a municipal housing was built from 1953 to 1956, where a memorial plaque to Madersperger.
