Joseph Echteler

Joseph Anton Echteler ( born January 5, 1853 in Legau, † December 23, 1908 in Mainz ) was a German sculptor.

Life

After Echteler had von Sand wood treasured cows and sheep, the son of the economist and baker Leonhard Echteler and Marianna up to the age of twelve, he learned at a stonecutter in Leutkirch im Allgäu the craft of stone-breaker, carver, sculptor and Stuckators. On wanderings he came to Stuttgart, where he from 1871 to 1872 attended the art school. In Munich, he removed from November 1872 his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts under Max von Widnmann and Joseph Knabl continued.

As an artist Echteler in Munich was first known by medallions, reliefs and busts with the portraits of renowned stage artist, singer, professional colleagues, scholars, Empire councils, ecclesiastical dignitaries, diplomats and royal persons he lifelike designed from photographs. His works are characterized by their great similarity and careful implementation. This was soon followed by grave monuments, religious and mythological works of art, animals, and group presentations.

In May 1884 Echteler left his studio in Munich and moved with his family to the United States of America. Here he worked mainly as Porträtbildner. As 1885 President Grant died, and it was decided to erect a monument in New York and mausoleum to his memory, Echteler worked out a draft and was in February 1887 one of the finalists. However, he ultimately did not get the job. In the fall of 1887, he returned to Munich. He made busts and plaques of the highest crown support of Europe and has received numerous honors, medals and awards. Marriages and descendants

Echteler was married three times. Having emerged three girls, but no male child from his first marriage, he repudiated in 1890 after the stillbirth of a son his wife Dorathea (nee Seybold ) with their children, Marie ( b. 1878 ), Olga (* 1886) and Eda (* 1888). These remained in the United States, where he had sent them in April 1890 for an excuse just before he left the marriage annulled and re- married. From Real Jewellers second and third marriage no common descendants emerged. His second wife was Elisabeth Fuchs ( born Geret ); the marriage was concluded in 1890 and divorced in 1904. Recently married Echteler 1905, the widow Anna Kramer ( born Nikolai ).

Echteler is also the inventor of an apparatus for natural plastic copy, as well as a rock-hard mass " Euphoryt ".

True coupler dog, the St. Bernard Bayard ( Barry ), saved 37 lives from water and fire and was a direct descendant of the famous Swiss avalanche dog Barry. The New York Times reported in 1884 that Echteler Barry presented at the Westminster dog show in New York.

Since a head injury through a Pferdehufschlag 1889 Echteler was irritable and sensitive to noise. In Munich he came into neighborly disputes with lawsuits and processes, which is why he moved to the home of his third wife to Mainz 1908. There, two months later he died at the age of 55 years.
