Joseph Melcher

Joseph Melcher ( born March 19, 1806 Vienna, † December 20, 1873 in Green Bay, USA) from 1868 to 1873 the first Catholic bishop of Green Bay.

Life

Joseph Melchers was born in Vienna and emigrated to the United States, where he was ordained in 1830 for the Diocese of Saint Louis priest. Peter Richard Kenrick, the first Archbishop of Saint Louis after collecting the diocese to an archdiocese, Melcher appointed vicar general. In this capacity, he participated in several trips to Germany to win aspiring priests for service in America.

With the establishment of the Diocese of Green Bay on March 3, 1868, Pope Pius IX. Joseph Melcher to its first bishop. On July 12, 1868 Archbishop Kenrick gave him a bishop. Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Milwaukee, John Hennigan, and the Bishop of Alton, Henry Damian Duncker.

Joseph Melcher participated as a Council Father at the First Vatican Council.
