Joseph Nicollet

Joseph Nicolas Nicollet also known as Jean -Nicolas Nicollet known ( born July 24, 1786 in Cluses, France, † September 11, 1843 in Washington, DC) was a French mathematician and geographer.

From 1817 he worked at the Paris Observatory by Pierre -Simon Laplace. Later he became professor of mathematics at the Collège Louis- le -Grand. 1832 Nicollet emigrated to the United States.

He led three expeditions to explore the Upper Mississippi. In 1839 he went to Washington, where he fell ill and died. 1843 's Map of the hydrographical basin of the Upper Mississippi was published.

The Nicollet County in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the moon crater Nicollet are named after him.
