Joseph Othmar Rauscher

Joseph Othmar Rauscher Knight (* October 6, 1797 in Vienna, † November 24, 1875 ibid ) was a Roman Catholic Archbishop of Vienna and a cardinal.

Life

Rauscher, eldest son of the Imperial Ruling Council Franz Seraph Knights of Rauscher studied 1816 first law in Vienna. There he met Clement Maria Hofbauer, and began in 1820 to study theology. He was ordained priest on 21 August 1823. From 1825 he was professor of church history and canon law at the Lyceum in Salzburg. Since 1832, he was Director of the Oriental Academy in Vienna. He was appointed in 1849 to the Prince-Bishop of Seckau. He received his episcopal consecration of the Archbishop of Salzburg Friedrich zu Schwarzenberg on 15 April 1849. March 26, 1853, the appointment was made archbishop of the Archdiocese of Vienna and on 17 December 1855, the elevation to cardinal. He was assigned the titular church of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome.
