Joseph Sill Clark, Sr.

Joseph Sill "Joe" Clark ( born November 30, 1861 in German Town, Pennsylvania, † April 14, 1956 ) was an American tennis player.

Biography

Clark studied at Harvard University. In Intercollegiate Championship in 1883 he proposed as Harvard champion his fellow student and U.S. champion Richard Sears. The doubles competition he won along with Malcolm Chace.

Clark won in 1885 along with Richard Sears, the American Tennis Championships in doubles against Henry Slocum and Percy Knapp in three sets 6:3, 6:0 and 6:2. In individual he made in the years 1885-1887 a place in the semifinals.

From 1889 to 1891 was president of the Clark United States Lawn Tennis Association ( USLTA ).

He and his wife Kate Richardson Avery (* July 10, 1868 ) he had two children, Joseph Sill II ( born October 21, 1901) and Avery Borodell ( born March 2, 1904).

In 1955, Clark was inducted into the newly formed International Tennis Hall of Fame. His older brother Clarence Clark in 1983 also added.
