Joseph Simon Volmar

Joseph Simon Wolmar ( born October 26, 1796 in Bern, † October 6, 1865 ) was a Swiss painter, sculptor, lithographer and art teacher.

From 1814, he studied in Paris under Horace Vernet, Théodore Géricault and David d' Angers. After he had worked in France as an animal painter, he was elected in 1836 as a lecturer at the Bernese art school. Here he designed a monument to Rudolf von Erlach, which was inaugurated by many political disputes in 1849, and was appointed by the University of Bern for an honorary doctorate. He also created a monument to Jean Baptiste Girard in Fribourg. It was in 1850 appointed by the local government, was inaugurated ten years later, and then supplemented by relief of Raphael Christians.
