Jotham Johnson

Jotham Johnson ( born October 21, 1905 in Newark, † February 8, 1967 in New York City ) was an American classical archaeologist.

Life

Jotham Johnson studied Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University, where he earned the 1926 undergraduate degrees. He continued his studies at the American School of Classical Studies in Rome continued. Under the direction of Michael Rostovtzeff, he participated in the excavations at Dura Europos, which he did his thesis Dura Studies ( 1931). From 1931 to 1933 he directed the excavation of the Roman colony Minturnae ( Minturno ) in Italy, which were conducted by the University of Pennsylvania. He then worked as a lecturer and later Professor of Classical Studies at New York University. From 1961 to 1964, Johnson President of the Archaeological Institute of America and the managing editor of the journal Archaeology.
