Prilly is a municipality in the district of Lausanne in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Prilly is located on 525 m above sea level. M., 4.5 km northwest of the capital of the canton Lausanne ( straight line ). The suburban community of Lausanne extends on the southwestern slope of the Jorat, in the Vaud Mittelland, a scenic location above Renens and 150 m above the lake level of Lake Geneva.

The area of ​​1.9 km ² large municipality area includes a section on the southwestern slope of the plateau of the Jorat. While the upper slope section is quite steep, the lower part to a weak tendency. The northwestern boundary is the wooded valley of a page of Bach's Mèbre. From the municipality surface 1997 36 % came from settlements, 12% of forest and woody plants and 52% to agriculture.

Prilly consists of the two villages Jouxtens ( 525 m above sea level. M. ) and Mézery ( 555 m above sea level. M. ) on a hillside overlooking Renens. Neighboring communities of Prilly are Romanel -sur -Lausanne, Prilly, Renens, Crissier and an exclave of Lausanne.

Population

With 1358 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Prilly belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the 87.3% inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 5.7 % and 1.6 % portugiesischsprachig (as of 2000). The population of Prilly amounted in 1850 to 176 residents in 1900 to 236 inhabitants. Since 1960 (327 inhabitants), a rapid population increase was observed with a quadrupling of the population within 40 years. The settlement area of Prilly has grown together almost seamlessly with those of Renens, Prilly and Romanel -sur -Lausanne.

Economy

Prilly was until the mid-20th century, a predominantly coined by farming village. Today, agriculture has only a marginal role in the occupational structure of the population. Most jobs today are available in the service sector, but Prilly has only smaller companies.

Since the 1950s, the settlement pressure rose to the community located on the edge of town Lausanne. The villagers fought back successfully against a development plan in 1956, which should allow the installation of extensive residential area in the municipal area. In recent decades, the village has developed thanks to its attractive location into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work primarily in the city of Lausanne and in their surrounding communities.

Traffic

The community is easily accessible via. It is near the main road 5 from Lausanne to Yverdon- les- Bains. The A9 motorway was opened in 1974 (Lausanne -Sion ) crosses the municipality. The next motorway Lausanne- Blécherette the A9, a Lausanne- Crissier on the A1 is 2 km from the village.

History

The earliest traces of settlement in the municipality of Prilly come from a Roman villa. The first mention of Jouxtens was in 1223 under the name Jotens. Subsequent designations were Jothens ( 1227 ) and Joutens ( 1228 ). The name goes back to the Burgundian personal names Jutha and means for the people of Jutha. Mézery is already mentioned in 929 as Masiriaco, later the spellings Maisirie and Maiserie appeared ( in the 13th century) and Miaxirier. This name derives from the Latin personal name Masirius.

Since the Middle Ages Prilly was in possession of the Lausanne Cathedral Chapter. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 Prilly came under the administration of the bailiwick of Lausanne. While Jouxtens directly under the jurisdiction of Lausanne, Mézery formed its own Court and was from 1698 the de Crousaz family. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Lausanne.

Attractions

The Castle of Mézery dates from the early 18th century. In 1750, the church was built.
