Józef Brandt

Józef Brandt ( born February 11, 1841 in Szczebrzeszyn, † June 12, 1915 in Radom ) was a Polish painter who mainly devoted himself to historical painting.

Life

Brandt devoted himself initially to the engineer compartment and therefore attended the École Centrale in Paris, but turned to painting in 1862 and moved to Munich, where he trained under Franz Adam and Karl Theodor von Piloty and 1867 established his own studio.

To his main subject, he made soldiers and war pictures, mostly from the 17th century, and genre scenes, endowed from the lives of his countrymen, who he characterized masterfully with juicy, but often highly greyish gambling atmosphere, even if the drawing was initially deficient and the detail sometimes appeared somewhat neglected.

One of his first major pictures 1867 was an attack on Polish rider Turks in the 17th century.
