Jozef De Kesel

Jozef De Kesel ( born June 17, 1947 in Ghent, East Flanders ) is a bishop of Bruges.

Life

Jozef De Kesel studied at seminaries in Ghent and Leuven and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. On August 26, 1972 he was ordained a priest by his uncle Leo De Kesel, who was from 1969 to 1990 Auxiliary Bishop of Ghent. In 1977 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the historical Jesus in the Theology of Rudolf Bultmann. He was a lecturer at the Sociale Hogeschool Gent and professor of fundamental theology and philosophical anthropology at the seminary in Ghent ( Ghent Groot Seminarie ) and at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. De Kesel was 1992-2002 episcopal vicar for the theological and pastoral formation in the diocese of Ghent.

He was appointed by Pope John Paul II, titular bishop of Bulna and appointed auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Mechelen - Brussels in 2002. He received his episcopal consecration Cardinal Godfried Danneels, Archbishop of Mechelen -Brussels; Co-consecrators were Arthur Luysterman, Bishop of Ghent, and Rémy Victor Vancottem, Auxiliary Bishop of Mechelen -Brussels.

In 2010 he was beatified by Benedict XVI. appointed 26 Bishop of Bruges.
