Jozef Gregor-Tajovský

Jozef Gregor Tajovský, actually Jozef Gregor ( born October 14, 1874 in Tajov, Austria - Hungary, now Slovakia, † May 20, 1940 in Bratislava) was a Slovak realist writer, playwright, journalist, teacher and politician.

Life

Tajovský was born into a large family of a shoemaker, but spent the greater part of his childhood with his grandparents. From 1886-89 he attended a school in the nearby town of Banská Bystrica, he continued his studies 1889-93 at a teacher training college in Kláštor pod Znievom continued. There he began to write his first literary works.

After graduation, he began working as a teacher and was initially in Banská Bystrica, changed to 1898 his workshop after Horna Lehota, Kolárovice, Dohňany, Lopej, Pohorelá and Podlavice. This was due to his national conviction against the then current Magyarization the Hungarian state and church authority. Therefore, he stopped teaching and studied 1898-1900 at a Business School in Prague. After that, he was an official of the Vidiecka Ludova banka (about: Rural People's Bank) and Tatra banka and also acted as editor for the Ludove noviny (People's Daily ). He married in 1907 in Nădlac (then Hungarian Nagylak ) Hana Lilgová (* 1885, † 1958), who worked as Hana Gregorová in the literature. In 1912 he was elected deputy chairman of the Slovak National Party and was Hlasnik after the outbreak of the First World War for a short time editor of the newspaper Národný. In 1915 he had to serve as a soldier on the eastern front, but deserted from the imperial Army. He fought with Czechoslovak soldiers and stepped in Russia in 1917 in the Czechoslovak Legion, where he reached the rank of captain.

After the First World War, he returned in 1919 to the United States in the newly created Czechoslovakia, where he is first in Turc. Sv. Martin, later settled in Bratislava and worked as a legionary Prominent offices. In 1925, he retired as a lieutenant colonel of the Czechoslovak army and devoted himself thereafter entirely the literature. Together with his wife he promoted young Slovak authors.

Tajovský died in 1940 in Bratislava and was buried in his hometown Tajov.

Work

Jozef Gregor Tajovský is regarded as a representative of the Slovak realism. In his works, the fate and life of the Slovak people, its problems, but also morality are.
