Jozef Van Lerius

Joseph Hendrik Frans van Lerius ( born November 23, 1823 in Boom near Antwerp, † February 29, 1876 in Mechelen ) was a Belgian painter.

Life

Lerius came at age 15 in 1838 at the Art Academy in his hometown ( Academie voor schoone Kunsten ), where he was a pupil of the painter Gustave Wappers.

1854 appointed one Lerius as a lecturer at the Antwerp Academy of Art and appointed him o.Prof .. Among his most important students included George du Maurier, George Clausen and Piet Verhaert. Even Franz Wenzel Black (1842-1919) was one of his employees.

On some study trips, which led Lerius by Germany, Austria and Italy, he addressed the landscapes through which he traveled. In principle, however Lerius but became known as a portraitist.

At the age of 52 years, the painter Joseph van Lerius died on 29 February 1876. He is buried in the cemetery Schoonselhof in Antwerp.

The lawyer and writer Theodor van Lerius was his cousin.
