József Kossics

József Kossics (Slovene: Jožef Kosić; * to October 9, 1788 in Bogojina, Hungary, now Slovenia, † December 26, 1867 Oberzemming, Hungary ) was a Slovene writer, poet, philologist, historian, folklore researcher and a Catholic priest in Hungary. He was of Croatian descent.

Kossics was in Bogojina (Hungarian: Bagonya ) born in the Prekmurje region. His father József Kossics was schoolmaster in Varaždin (Croatia). He attended secondary school in Güns and Szombathely. In 1811 he was ordained a priest and served as a chaplain in Prekmurje, in Felldorf, Turnišče and Sveti Jurij. 1816 he was appointed priest Unterzemming ( a Slovenian- German village in Szentgotthárd ). His most important work is the first Slovenian monograph, From Wenden ( Slovenia ) in Hungary (O - Vendskih Totih na Vogrskom / A Magyar Országi Vendus - Tótokról ). The German edition was published in 1829.

From 1829 Kossics priest in Oberzemming. Here he is in 1867 also died.
