József Szlávy

József Szlávy of Érkenéz and Okány ( born November 23, 1818 in Győr, † August 8, 1900 in Zsitvaújfalu, Kingdom of Hungary, now Slovakia) was a Hungarian politician, prime minister of Hungary from 1872 to 1874 and from 1880 to 1882 joint Finance Minister of Austria-Hungary.

Life

József Szlávy studied at the Mining Academy in Schemnitz, received his engineering degree in 1844 and joined the civil service. Politically, he was a supporter of the Liberal Party of Ferenc Deák. It is attributed to the conservative part of the party. During the revolution of 1848/49 he worked as a government commissioner responsible for the mining industry in the country. He was imprisoned after the defeat of Hungary in 1849 and sentenced to five years imprisonment. Dismissed after two years he lived in retirement until 1861 he was a member of the Reichstag reconvened. In 1865, he was Lord Lieutenant of the county of Bihar.

After the compromise with Austria in 1867 Szlávy served as State Secretary in the Ministry of Interior and in 1870 as Trade Minister in the government of Gyula Andrássy. On 2 December 1872 he was appointed by King Ferenc József prime minister. The office he held only by 1 March 1874. Subsequently, he served as a financial and then as Minister of Defence, responsible for Honvéd Landwehr. As finance minister, he continued the austerity measures his predecessor Menyhért Lónyay. From 1879 to 1880 he was Chairman of Parliament, 1880-1882 joint kuk Minister of Finance and from 1894 to 1896, when he resigned for health reasons, he was chairman of the Upper House. He was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
