Juan Martínez Montañés

Juan Martinez Montanes ( born March 16, 1568 Alcalá la Real, † June 18, 1649 in Seville) was a Spanish sculptor.

Life

Martinez Montanes was born in Andalusia and educated. He worked most of his life in Seville, mainly with wood, on which he then auftrug color. Montanes has created a number of impressive altars for the Cathedral of Seville and neighboring churches ( 1607-20 ). He was distinguished by the realistic representation of the figure of Christ. Montanes, the " Spanish Michelangelo ," died on June 18, 1649 the plague. He had the Sevillian school of sculpture and generally the art and aesthetics in Seville, and thus in the Spanish Empire dominated like no other.
