Jubilee Records

Jubilee Records was an independent American jazz and rhythm and blues record label.

History of the record label

The record label Jubilee Records was founded in May 1946 in New York City by Herb Abramson and Jerry Blaine. Blaine later took over the business share of Abramson. The record label specializing in rhythm and blues and current hit recordings, such as Latin jazz by Bobby Montez. Moreover, appeared on the label some jazz records by musicians such as Charles Mingus ( Mingus Three 1957), Jackie McLean, Ray Draper, Joe Puma, Herb Geller, Lou Levy, Eddie Costa and Vinnie Burke and singer Ethel Ennis.

Jubilee Records was the first label, which reached the market of white record buyers with a hit of black vocal group Orioles; its title Crying in the Chapel remained a total of 18 weeks in first place in the rhythm & blues charts, reaching in 1953 rank 11 of the pop charts and became a million-seller. Ever the label's catalog reads like the discography of the Orioles, the 5000 ( It's Too Soon to Know) in July 1948 bestowed the label with Jubilee catalog number, the first single from the label and there all singles up to their label - change in published in 1956.

In addition, the sub label Josie Records was founded in 1954; Hits on Josie were the title Speedoo of The Cadillacs and Do You Wanna Dance by Bobby Freeman. The last big hit was the rhythm and blues instrumentals Poor Boy / Wail! of the Royal Tones. Jubilee / Josie were liquidated in 1970; their catalog was acquired by Roulette Records. Many jazz tracks later appeared in CD form on Fresh Sound Records.
