Judith Binney

Judith Mary Caroline Binney, DNZM, ( born 1940 in New South Wales, Australia, † February 15, 2011 in Auckland ) was a New Zealand historian and from 2004 professor at the University of Auckland.

Life and work

Binney was born in 1940 in Australia, in 1947 came with her parents to New Zealand and studied at the University of Auckland, where she graduated in 1965 also made ​​in history. From 1966 to 2004 she worked as a lecturer at the History Department of the University. She was an adjunct professor until 1996 and was appointed full professor with a fixed chair in 1997.

Binney's first book was written in 1968 from her doctoral work out. It was a biography of Thomas Kendall (see plants), an early Anglican missionary who went on behalf of the Church Missionary Society in New Zealand, made ​​friends with the warlord Hongi Hika, in the arms trade with muskets (see Musketenkriege ) entangled and after adultery with a 17 -year-old Māori was eventually dismissed by the Church Missionary Society.

It was followed by other works and publications on the history of New Zealand.

Binney was approached in December 2009 in Auckland by a truck and suffered serious head injuries from which they, however, slowly recovered. She died at the age of 70 on February 15, 2011 in Auckland.

Awards

On December 31, 2005, she was honored for her achievements in the New Zealand historical research with the DNZM Lady Companion New Zealand Order of Merit.

Binney is a member of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Board, may count itself among the Guardians of the Alexander Turnbull Library and was a member of the Te Papa Tongarewa Board.
