New Zealand Historic Places Trust
The New Zealand Historic Places Trust ( māori: Pouhere taonga ) is a nonprofit organization in New Zealand, which is responsible for the conservation in New Zealand. It was founded by the Historic Places Act 1954 with the mission to promote the identification, protection and preservation of historical and cultural heritage of New Zealand. It is a stand-alone device Crown Entity. The budget in 2009 amounted to 14.41 million New Zealand dollars.
The headquarters of the Organization is located in Antrim House in Boulcott Street in Wellington. Regional offices and operations are located in Kerikeri, Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.
The organization is supported by a Board of Trustees headed by John Acland and a Council on the heritage of Māori, led by Tumu te Heuheu, out. It maintains relations with the Minister for Arts Culture and Heritage, Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Department of Conservation and the Department of Māori Affairs Te Puni Kokiri the.
The organization publishes the quarterly published magazine New Zealand Heritage.
The Trust includes historically important buildings such as the Kerikeri Mission House and the Stone Store.

The organization maintains a list of the most historically significant sites in New Zealand, which is divided into four main categories:
- Historic Places ( monuments )
- Historic Areas ( areas of protected buildings )
- Wahi tapu ( sacred sites Māori )
- Wahi Tapu Areas ( sacred areas of Māori )
The individual sites are classified into two categories:
- Category I - Sites of special or outstanding historical or cultural significance
- Category II - sites of historical or cultural significance
In August 2010, the registry included 5500 entries.
Maori Heritage Council
The Maori Heritage Council is part of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, was established by the Historic Places Act 1993. Its function is:
- Protection and registration of wahi tapu and wahi tapu areas ( sacred sites of Maori and related areas)
- Support of the Trust, to ensure inter-cultural perspective in its work
- Support the traditional structures of the Māori ( whanau, hapu and iwi ) in the maintenance and use of their historic cultural resources
- Advice on recommendations of the trust in regard to archaeological sites
- Representation of the interests of the Trust and Council in regard to the cultural heritage of Māori in the public and among Māori.
