Jugend (magazine)

Youth - Munich illustrated weekly journal for art and life was founded by Georg Hirth and Fritz von Ostini art and literary magazine that was published from 1896 to 1940 in Munich. After the death Hirth 1916 Franz Schoenberner became editor. Editors have included Hans E. Hirsch, Theodor Riegler, Wolfgang Petzet. In addition to the text editors, such as Fritz von Ostini or Albert Matthai, operated among others the picture editor Franz Lang Heinrich.

The youth became the namesake of the art Art Nouveau, which shows how important the magazine for the stylistic debate of the early modern era. However, the content and direction of the youth can not reduce even in its heyday, the label " Art Nouveau ". In addition to modern illustrations and ornamentation of Art Nouveau, other styles played a role, especially the so-called Impressionism. In addition, the magazine also operated satirical and cultural criticism. Main targets were the " hypocrisy " (keywords anti- Modernist oath, Lex Heinze ), the increasing influence of the churches, especially the Catholic (keyword Ultramontanism ) and especially the political right in the center party. The contribution of youth to the literature of the early modern period, however, remained modest - quite in contrast to the competitive enterprise Simplicissimus from the publisher Albert Langen, also founded in 1896.

From the First World War, the youth has increasingly become a German national and Bavarian- heimattümelnden magazine; a tendency for there had been in the early vintages. That changed again until the mid-1920s, when the issue again the artists of the younger generation, such as George Grosz, opened and printed texts, for example, by Kurt Tucholsky and Erich Kästner.

After 1933, the issue of the ethnic line of the Nazis to fit. However, it was discontinued in 1940.

Not everything imagery that can be found in youth, was produced specifically for the magazine. Thus there are, for example, " purchases " of images of the " prince of painters " Böcklin, Lenbachplatz and Kaulbach, or by Thomas Theodor Heine and Giovanni Segantini.
