Julia de Burgos

Julia Constanze Burgos García, better known as Julia de Burgos ( born February 17, 1914 in Carolina, Puerto Rico, † July 6, 1953 in New York City ) was a Puerto Rican poet and poetess.

Life and work

Julia de Burgos grew up in a barrio of Santa Cruz. As the oldest of thirteen children she went to school and studied after the completion of the Escuela Superior from 1931 to 1933 at the Universidad de Puerto Rico.

After that, she taught until her marriage in 1934 in Naranjito. In the following years she worked for the Puerto Rico Economical Rehabilitation Agency. Between 1937 and 1939 three volumes of poetry from her, for which she received an award from the Instituto de Literatura Puertorriqueña published.

In 1940, she left Puerto Rico and moved to New York, where she lived as a journalist. End of the year they went to Cuba and studied at the University of Havana literature and philosophy. In 1942 she returned to New York, where she found support in the Circle of Ibero- American Writers and Poets and second husband, the musician Armando Marín married. In the last years of the war she lived with her husband in Washington and worked in the office of the Coordinator of Inter- American Affairs.

1946 in their liver cirrhosis was diagnosed, and her final years were determined by hospitalizations due to their alcohol consumption and liver problems. In 1952 she published her last book of poems.

In the 1960s, appeared in Puerto Rico two editions of her poems. 1967 published Ivette Jimenez Báez the monograph Julia de Burgos: vida y poesía. The Universidad de Puerto Rico in 1987 she was awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of their contributions to the literary culture of the island. 1997 her complete works appeared in English translation.
