The University of Puerto Rico (Spanish: Universidad de Puerto Rico), abbreviated UPR, since 1903 and is the oldest and largest university of Puerto Rico. It is under state auspices ( Universidad pública ). Your seat is San Juan.

History

In 1900, the Escuela Normal Industrial in Fajardo was established as the first institution of higher education in Puerto Rico. The following year the institution was moved to Rio Piedras. On March 12, 1903, a law establishing the university was adopted. That day was declared the Escuela Normal as the first department of the university.

In 1908, the federal government extended by the law Morrill Act, the financial subsidies for the University of Puerto Rico. This was also the founding of El Colegio de Agricultura, an academic agricultural school in Mayagüez, in 1911 possible. A year later in Colegio de Agricultura y Artes Mecánicas ( CAAM ) has been renamed.

On September 20, 1966, Roberto Sánchez Vilella then governor signed a law on the reorganization of the University, which had, among other effects on the following areas:

  • Full autonomy of the School of Medicine with its own ( new ) campus.
  • Full autonomy of Campus Mayagüez and Río Piedras
  • Establishment of field offices Arecibo, Cayey and Humacao.

UPR consists of eleven campus with about 61967 students and staff 14177 employees, including 5054 teaching staff. The fields of study include human medicine, law, mathematics, management science, business administration, computer science, architecture, agronomy and biology. There are two official college radio station ( 89.7 -FM WRTU and WRUO -FM 88.3 ).
