Julia Scher

Julia Scher (born 1954 in Hollywood, California) is an American artist.

Life

Julia Scher studied painting, sculpture, graphic arts at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA ) and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Since 2006 she is Professor of Media Arts at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.

The main theme of the American artist is the increasing surveillance in modern society through electronic media such as intercom systems, video cameras and the Internet. In an exhibition at the Kunstverein in Hamburg, she installed surveillance cameras, for example, to the men's room. This Schers confrontation with the monitoring remains ambivalent: in addition to the threat posed by systems it is getting back the technical fascination with these objects, as well as the paradoxical desire of people then to be monitored.
