Júlio Dinis

Júlio Dinis, the pseudonym of Joaquim Guilherme Gomes Coelho ( born November 14, 1839 in Porto, † September 12, 1871 ibid ), was a Portuguese physician and writer.

Life

The son of a Portuguese father and an English mother was deputy professor at the Medical School of Porto. He had several stories already published about life in the countryside in the Jornal do Porto, when he was forced to resign in his medical function because of increasing tuberculosis. He retired due to illness in the coastal town of Ovar and there wrote the novel in 1867, by which he was known: As Pupilas do Senhor reitor. A year later he published Uma Família Inglesa ( " An English family "). Júlio Dinis died in 1871 at the age of 31 years to his illness.

Work

Dinis is considered the first great novelist of the modern Portuguese civil society. His novels are written in a simple and direct style for a wide audience. His first novel was referring to his own family situation and described the influence of English on Portuguese culture and the second describes the English society in Porto. Some of his works and plays were published posthumously. There are no translations of his books into other languages.
