Julius Chan

Julius Chan, GCMG, KBE (陈仲民Pinyin: Chén Zhongmin ) ( born August 29, 1939 on the Tanga Islands, New Ireland ) was Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea from 1980 to 1982 and from 1994 until 1997.

Biography

Chan, the son of merchant Chin Pak (陈柏) from Taishan, China, was educated at Marist College Ashgrove in Australia, and was first introduced in the 1960s, politically active. He was Deputy Prime Minister three times (1976, 1985, 1986 ), and twice Minister of Finance ( 1972-1977 and 1992-1994 ). In 1976 he was Minister of Industry and 1994 foreign and trade ministers. In 1970, Chan Chairman of the People's Progress Party. He was knighted in 1981.

His campaign for re-election as prime minister in August 1994 had two main issues: national security and economic development. In 1997, the Chan - government dissolved by the commitment of the British- South African mercenary group Sandline International to quell the civil war on the island of Bougainville, the Sandline affair, which was accompanied by severe unrest and a ten-day mutiny of the underpaid army. In response to the unrest a motion of censure against Chan was provided on 25 March 1997 in Parliament, which however failed. However, he resigned the next day.

He is currently a Governor of New Ireland Province and supported in this position on 10 March 2010 a motion of censure against the Speaker of Parliament Jeffrey Nape.

Julius Chan is married to Stella Chan since 1966 and has four children. His son Byron is also papua of New Guinea politician.
