Julius Leopold Frederik Krohn ( born May 19, 1835 in Vyborg, † August 28, 1888 ) was a Finnish poet, folklorist and literary scholar. He was the father of Kaarle Krohn and Aino Kallas.

Life

Krohn first studied Finnish language and literature and philosophy at the University of Helsinki. In 1862 he received his doctorate with the work Suomen Kielinen runollisuus Ruotsinvallan Aikana ( German: " seal in the Finnish language during the period of Swedish rule "). In the same year he began to teach as a professor of Finnish language and literature at the University of Helsinki. In 1875 he is a lecturer there in 1885 and finally Extra Ordinary.

Under the pseudonym Suonio he wrote poems. The last 20 years of his life he worked intensively with the Finnish national epic Kalevala. To investigate the origin of the Kalevala, he used the locally - historical method, which was extended by his son later for geographic- historical method ( Finnish School ). The result of his research was, firstly, that the Kalevala was not only younger than previously thought, on the other hand, that parts of the epic originated in Karelia, Estonia and Ingria.
