Julius Kronberg

Julius Kronberg (* 1850 in Karlskrona, † October 17, 1921 in Stockholm) was a Swedish painter and professor at the Stockholm Academy of Fine Arts. Kronberg decorated many buildings, his works are exhibited, among others, the Swedish National Museum. He is one of the most prominent Swedish artists in the period 1870 to 1920.

Biography

Julius Kronberg was born in 1850 in Karlskrona. Even as a boy of fourteen he was accepted to the Academy of Arts in Stockholm and trained there during the 1860s. A travel scholarship took him from Copenhagen, Dusseldorf and Paris through Europe. For a long time he spent in Munich, where he hosted his studies on the decorative painting, before he settled in Rome in 1877.

Kronberg met in Munich and Rome several Nordic artists and writers to know, among other Henrik Ibsen.

In 1889 he had built to his own requirements in a studio in Stockholm northern Djurgården.

Kronberg was a professor at the Academy of Arts from 1895 to 1898.

After Kronbergs death in Stockholm in 1921, his studio was left to the Nordic Museum and at the behest of his girlfriend Wilhelmina von Hallwyl finally the Foundation Skansen in Stockholm.

Motifs, style and inspiration

Kronberg often painted figures of mythological motifs, such as the Bible or works of William Shakespeare. He had, among other things by Rubens and Titian inspired equally as of the Munich painting. During his time in Rome inspired him, among other Tiepolo.

Painting

The painting " Jaktnymf och Fauner " made ​​him a wider audience than it was in 1876 in the National Museum. Kronberg also led ceiling paintings of the life of Jesus from the Adolf Fredrik Church on Norrmalm in Stockholm.

A still well- known painting is " David and Saul". It originated in Rome and impresses mainly by its composition and as an example of spectacular salon painting. Color- it seems more subdued.

Kronberg also produced a well-known portrait of Henrik Ibsen.
