Junia (gens)

The Iunii ( German: Junier ) were an important family (gens Iunia ) in ancient Rome. Since the mid- Republic they are known as plebeian gender, however, the back led to patrician Iunii at the beginning of the Republic, whose existence is doubted in modern research.

Origin and family branches

The name Junius derives from the goddess Juno, and possibly the month of June, (June). As a mythical ancestor, the Iunii looked at a same companions of Aeneas.

The most famous branch of the family were the Iunii Bruti. In addition, the Iunii silanization were significant, whose nickname Silanus probably from the Sila mountain forest on the south-western peninsula of southern Italy ( Calabria today ) caramel ( perhaps descended this family is originally from this area ), and possibly the Greek Silenos. While the branch of Iunii Bruti went out to the end of the Republic, the Iunii silanization acquired greater importance especially under the Julian and Claudian emperors.

Important signs point to an early connection of Iunii with Christianity. In the year 49 were reported by Claudius Jews and Christians from Rome. The only exiles that Tacitus mentions for this year, concern Iunia Calvina and Lollia. Several members of the Junius family were charged with foreign superstition and / or incest under Nero, perhaps reflecting only the contemporary prejudices against the young religion. What is the relationship to the Roman gens, the famous apostle Iunia is being greeted by Paul in his Letter to the Romans of the year 56, can no longer be determined because of the many namesakes.
