Junior 8

Junior 8, J8 short, is a program of UNICEF with the support of the respective Presidency of the Group of Eight ( G8). There are children and young people the opportunity to bring to the language their positions on global issues in the context of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the G8 countries.

The Junior 8 program includes the Junior 8 Competition and the Junior 8 summit. Due to competition teams will be determined by young people who participate as representatives of their country at the Junior 8 summit. The Junior 8 Summit (short J8 Summit ) will take place at the margins of the G8 summit in 2005. On the J8 Summit, the young representatives discuss items on the agenda of the G8 as well as topics that are for children and adolescents is of particular relevance. Since the G8 Summit 2006, the youth representatives to present their final declaration in a common round directly the Heads of State and Government of the G8.

Participant

At Junior 8 program young people aged 13 to 17 years can take part in the G8 countries Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Canada, USA and Russia. In addition to the J8 Summit also some youth representatives from developing and emerging countries will be invited.

Junior 8 Competition

At Junior 8 Competition groups of students ( same school ) participate. An essential part of the application is an essay which deals with some of the set by the Junior 8 program topics. The selection of winners is made in two stages: First, it is made ​​by a jury of UNICEF and the Morgan Stanley Foundation, a preselection. From this pre-selection identified a panel of experts appointed by the organizers, which belong to adults and adolescents, the winner. The following criteria are evaluated:

Junior 8 Summit

The winner of the Junior 8 competition in the individual G8 countries be part of the Junior 8 Summit. The Junior 8 Summit will take place immediately before the meeting of Heads of State and Government of the G8. There, discuss and discuss the winning team of the competition points of the G8 agenda and topics that are of particular relevance for young people.

The J8 Summit takes several days to which the participants take part in discussions, workshops and exercises. At the end of a final declaration shall be drawn exclusively from the youth representatives, which outlined their proposed solutions for global problems. Since 2006, this final declaration will be presented personally by some J8 participants the Heads of State and Government.

Previous J8 Summit

  • July 3 to 6, 2005 in Edinburgh, on the occasion of the G8 Summit in Gleneagles, with 96 participants from the countries of the G8. The focus was on Africa and global warming. In addition, the UNICEF children's conference C8 (Children -8) was held in Dunblane.

  • June 3 to 9, 2007 in Wismar, on the occasion of the G8 Summit in Heiligendamm in 2007, with a total of 74 participants, 64 from the countries of the G8 and ten participants from ten developing and emerging countries.
