31st G8 summit

The 31st G8 summit took place from July 6 to July 8, 2005 at the Gleneagles Hotel in Auchterarder, Perth and Kinross, in Scotland instead. It was hosted by British Prime Minister Tony Blair. The summit was overshadowed by the attacks on the London Underground on 7 July 2005, the second day of the conference.

Topics

Traditionally, sets the host of the G8 summit laid the negotiating agenda. This is usually already in the weeks before the summit at the level of the ministry. This leads in the end to create a common final declaration, which can be signed by the participating States. For 2005, the British host focused on the issues of global climate change as well as the gap in the economic development of Africa. Other topics included the fight against international terrorism, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons as well as reforms in the Middle East.

In relation to the central theme of development of Africa it was to make an extensive possible debt relief and additional aid for Africa.

With regard to the central issue of climate change, it was a hand, to explore international amplifies the consequences of global warming. In addition, Tony Blair wanted to measures agreed upon which went far beyond the Kyoto Protocol, by trying key developing countries like India to persuade People's Republic of China, Mexico, Brazil and South Africa, which have not yet acceded to the Protocol, to reduce their greenhouse gas by simultaneously offering them the transfer of environmental technology. The theme is continued in the Gleneagles Dialogue.

Due to the terrorist attacks of 7 July, however, the attention of the summit was more attention to the fight against terrorism, so that other important issues remained unresolved.
