Junko Onishi (musician)

Junko Onishi (Japanese大西 润 子, Junko Onishi, born April 16, 1967 in Jōyō, Kyoto Prefecture) is a Japanese jazz pianist.

Life and work

Onishi grew up in Tokyo and had a classical piano training. After they had dealt with jazz, she spent three years studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston. She then worked in New York with artists such as Betty Carter, Joe Henderson, Kenny Garrett, Phil Woods ( Cool Woods 1999), Shigeharu Mukai and the Mingus Dynasty. In addition, she has performed with his own groups in clubs like the Village Vanguard and Sweet Basil. In 1993 she presented her debut album, followed in the 1990s, a number of productions for Blue Note Records. 1995 was Hat Trick with Jackie McLean. She plays on her album Baroque ( Verve 2010) both original compositions as well as standards by Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus. She is currently working in a trio with Yosuke Inoue ( bass) and Eric McPherson (drums), with whom she also appeared among others in the supporting program of the Paris exhibition Jazz en Japon.
