Mingus Dynasty (Band)

Mingus Dynasty is the name of a jazz combo, which maintains the repertoire of the composer and bandleader Charles Mingus.

Shortly after the death of Mingus, in December 1979, played at New York's Bottom Line club Jimmy Knepper, John Handy, George Adams, Hugh Lawson, Ted Curson and Dannie Richmond with Charlie Haden Mingus compositions and laid with the help of Sue Graham Mingus, the first Chair in the Sky album before. 1980 Richmond went with the last Mingusband ( Ricky Ford, Jack Walrath, Bob Neloms and Cameron Brown) on a European tour and played only compositions by Mingus.

The project soon called itself Mingus Dynasty (after the Columbia LP Mingus Dynasty from 1959 ). Three years after the death of Charles Mingus appeared under this name another album by former Mingus players, like Richard Williams, Jimmy Knepper, Sir Roland Hanna, Ricky Ford and younger Mingus admirers like Reggie Johnson ( " Reincarnation ", 1982). This group extended to the long-standing Mingus pianist Jaki Byard, Horace Parlan and the trumpeter Randy Brecker and Jack Walrath, saxophonists Craig Handy, Clifford Jordan and David Murray, and the flautist James Newton: The musicians regularly went on tour and played only compositions by Mingus.

From the Mingus Dynasty, some compositions by Charles Mingus as Chair In The Sky (1979 ), which was known by Joni Mitchell to Mingus 1979) or Harlene (1991 ) have been premiered.

In 1993, the Dynasty was not pursued in favor of the Mingus Big Band. For several years, however, the Mingus Dynasty has now been revived in a septet format. Currently playing in her musicians such as Craig Handy, Wayne Escoffery, Seamus Blake, Jaleel Shaw, Alex Foster, Frank Ku- Umba Lacy, Conrad Herwig, Luis Bonilla, Alex Sipiagin, Ryan Kisor, Boris Kozlov, John Benitez, Kenny Drew Jr., George Colligan, Jonathan Blake and Donald Edwards.
