Roland Hanna

Sir Roland Hanna ( born February 10, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan, † 13 November 2002 in Hackensack, New Jersey) was an American jazz pianist and composer.

Hanna was a child piano student of Josephine Love. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, he studied at the Eastman and the Juilliard School of Music. His musical career began in 1958 as a partner of Benny Goodman, the following year he worked with Charles Mingus. From 1967 to 1974 he was a member of the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra; In 1971 he was involved in Charles Mingus ' big band album Let My Children Hear Music. In 1974, he was next to Frank Wess of the founding members of the New York Jazz Quartet. Later he joined mainly as a soloist or in small ensembles such as in a duo with George Mraz or as a companion to musicians like Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Miriam Klein and Al Hibbler. For a series of benefit concerts for the benefit Liberian children made ​​him the president of Liberia, William Tubman, 1970 in the peerage; Since then he called himself Sir Roland Hanna.
