Juozas Zikaras

Juozas Zikaras, (born 6 Novemberjul / November 18 1881greg in the village Paljukai, Rajongemeinde Panevėžys, .. † November 10, 1944 in Kaunas ) was a Lithuanian sculptor.

Life

Zikaras received at the Drawing School of Ivan Trutnev Vilnius Art Academy his first training and continued this during the period 1904-1906 at night school at Josef Montwill in Vilnius on. In the years 1907 to 1910 he studied at the St. Petersburg school of the Society for the Promotion of the Arts. In 1910 he was inducted into the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. In the department of sculpture he studied under Giro Saleman and Vladimir Beklemishev. In 1915 he finished his studies, began with his thesis, but was drafted into the army. His unfinished work by the nut ( Мать ) took part in the exhibition yet of theses so that Zikaras received the diploma and a silver medal for his work in October 1916.

After his discharge from the army, he taught at various schools Petrograd. In 1918 he returned with his family returned to Lithuania. In the years 1918-928, he taught at high schools in Panevėžys. Since 1928 he lived in Kaunas - here he taught until 1940 at the local art school and then to 1944 at the Institute of Applied Arts. Zikaras adopted in 1944 in Kaunas life.

1972, a memorial museum was inaugurated in honor of him in his hometown Paljukai. Also in Kaunas has a corresponding museum, which is housed in his former home.

He created, among others, some monumental monuments, relief and portrait sculpture. Here he not only created portraits of persons of his time, but also a saint. In addition, he was responsible for the designs of the coins that were issued on the occasion of 10 years of independence of Lithuania 1928.
