Juraj (IV.) Zrinski

Juraj ( IV ) Zrinski ( German Georg Zrinski, Hungarian György Zrínyi IV; * April 13, 1549, † May 4, 1603 in Vép in Szombathely, Hungary) was a Croatian nobleman from the House of Zrinski.

Life

Juraj IV Zrinski, Count (the fourth of the same name in the family) was the son of Nikola Zrinski Šubić, the hero of Szigetvár, and his first wife Countess Katarina Zrinski born Francopan.

He was of royal Tavernicus (Treasurer ) of the Croatian-Hungarian Kingdom and bailiff of the historic county of Zala. Mostly he lived in his castle Čakovec in northern Croatia. On May 29 1579 he gave the privileges of the inhabitants of the surrounding settlement and since that time Čakovec is recognized as a free market. Today, the city Čakovec celebrates May 29 as the " birthday of the city."

Since his youth Zrinski was greatly impressed by the Protestant and Lutheran priests invited to occupy the Catholic parishes in Croatia. Thus, he created many enemies among Catholics.

He was married to Countess Anna D' Arco, who died in 1570. With her ​​Zrinski had a son, Nicholas VI. (Croatian: Nikola ). He married again, the Countess Sofia Stubenberg that still bore him four children, among them his son, George V, the future Ban of Croatia.

The early 1570s founded Juraj IV Zrinski Buchdruckerei in Nedelišće at Čakovec, one of the first printers in the former Croatia. He invited the printer Rudolf Hoff holder from Vienna and had printed there a lot of books. 1574 the famous legal book Decretum Tripartitum the publisher Ivanuš Pergošić was printed in Nedelišće.

Like his predecessors and successors also fought Juraj Zrinski against the Turks in many battles, mostly with success.

Zrinski died in 1603 in Hungary and was in the monastery of St.. Helena (Croatian: Sveta Jelena ) buried, next to the head of his famous father. The monastery is located two kilometers from Čakovec.
