Van Den Broeck won the Junior World Champion title in the time trial at the UCI Road World Championships 2001. 2003 was his first season in an international cycling team, the Belgian GS 3- Team Quick -Step - Davitamon.

In 2004 he moved to the U.S. Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team and thus in the first category of road cycling. In the following years he became one of the best stage riders and finished four times a place in the top ten at a Grand Tour: He was seventh in the Giro d' Italia in 2008, fourth in the Tour de France in 2010 and 2012 as well as eight of the Vuelta a España, 2011.
