Jurij Slatkonja

George of Slatkonia or Jurij Slatkonja ( born March 21, 1456 Ljubljana, ( Krain ), † April 26, 1522 in Vienna) was a Catholic bishop of Vienna.

Life

He studied in Ljubljana, Ingolstadt and Vienna, was ordained a priest, was cantor at the court orchestra in Vienna and from 1498 its director. He built the chapel, took on laypersons as a musician and let them also perform secular works. Through him, such composers as Paul Hofhaimer, Heinrich Isaac and Ludwig Senfl came to Vienna. Of his own work as a composer no works have survived.

He was canon and dean of Ljubljana and from 1506 Administrator of the diocese Pedena ( Piben ) in Istria. On March 1, 1513, he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Vienna and confirmed on 12 August of Pope Leo X by the Emperor Maximilian I.. His episcopal ordination on 13 November in Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral was the first since the founding of the diocese in 1469.

1521 came the Reformation preacher Paul Seperatus to Vienna, the Slatkonia on 12 January 1522 had to preach in the cathedral.

He is buried in St. Stephen's Cathedral.

The Archdiocese of Vienna gives the bishop - Slatkonia - price for new liturgical music since 2000.
