Juruti, Pará

Juruti is a city and a Munizip in the west of the Brazilian state of Pará, and is located at Amazon.

Bauxite deposits

In the field of Juruti is one of the world's largest deposits of high quality bauxite with low impurities and approximately 49% aluminum content. The size of the deposit is estimated at almost 700 million tonnes. Since 2009, Alcoa World Alumina operates there and Chemicals ( AWAC ), a joint subsidiary of Alcoa and Alumina Limited, a mine bauxite mining. The ore is shipped to the smelter to São Luís.

The mine is at the expense of living there from fishing and agriculture native population. Center of the degradation is the area around the lake of Juruti -Velho. The citizens' initiative Arcorjuve founded there in 2004 has managed with the support of the working locally Franciscan Sisters of Mary Star 2009 that the original population of collective land titles were granted. The WDR reported extensively on the local situation. Sister Brunhilde Henneberger, which was guaranteed in Juruti and Juruti -Velho development aid for 40 years awarded on 10 January 2010 from her home town Randersacker for this commitment with the Public Service Medal.
